Be Still<\/h2>\n

Psalm 46:10<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0is an often quoted verse. It says,\u00c2\u00a0\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Be still, and know that I am God.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d\u00c2\u00a0It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s on coffee mugs, posters, greeting cards. It is an invitation to experience God, to rest, slow down.<\/em><\/p>\n

It is also an invitation that I and many others reject on a daily basis.<\/p>\n

Our rejection of this invitation is interesting because of how tired most Americans are, how worn out we are, how run down we are from living life. You would think, the invitation from God for us to\u00c2\u00a0be still and know that He is God would be a welcome invitation.<\/p>\n

We don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t stop because deep down, we want to be God.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

But we reject it. Here are 3 reasons why.<\/p>\n

1. WE HAVE TO ADMIT WE\u00e2\u20ac\u2122RE NOT GOD<\/h2>\n

First off, to be still and know that he is God means I need to admit that I am not God. I have to admit there are things outside of my control. Things I can\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t do. Things I can\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t handle. People and situations I cannot control. This is not a fa\u00c3\u00a7ade many of us are willing to give up anytime soon. We know we aren\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t in control, but we are content to live with the illusion that we\u00c2\u00a0might be.<\/p>\n

2. WE HAVE TO STOP<\/h2>\n

Second, for me to be still means I am going to have to stop. Which means, slowing down, stopping things, resting. The reason most Americans don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t Sabbath and rest isn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t because we don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t know how to or aren\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t very good at it\u00e2\u20ac\u201dwe don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t rest and slow down because we don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t want to. As long as we are busy, we don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t have to think about what is broken in our lives. We don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t have to think about that situation from 10 years ago that we never dealt with and are trying to forget. Being still often means facing our sin. Being still gives God the opportunity to speak to us. But as long as we are moving, we are able to drown him out and not think about those broken places in our lives.<\/p>\n

3. WE HAVE TO KNOW<\/h2>\n

Third is the crucial word \u00e2\u20ac\u0153know.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Most of the time, when we talk about faith in God or a lack of faith, it all has to do with our feelings. We talk about \u00e2\u20ac\u0153not feeling in love\u00e2\u20ac\u009d as a reason for divorce. We don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t feel God\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s love, so it must not be real is a comment I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve heard countless times. But,\u00c2\u00a0Psalm 46<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0tells us to know that he is God. Not feel that he is God\u00e2\u20ac\u201dfeelings are fleeting and easy to dismiss. Knowing means I must slow down to ask, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153What do I know about God? Looking at the world around me, what does that say about God? How have I seen God be faithful to redeem other things in my life, why not this thing I won\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t give up?\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

By accepting God\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s invitation, we find rest. We find life.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

We don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t slow down, not because we can\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t or don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t have time\u00e2\u20ac\u201dwe don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t stop because deep down, we want to be God. We don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t want God to speak to us about those broken places in our lives, and we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d like to keep being the victim in that situation instead of facing it and letting him redeem it.<\/p>\n

But the invitation still stands, and by accepting it, we find rest. We find life. We find a place where we can let go of worries, hurt, frustrations and\u00c2\u00a0be with God. Exactly where we need to be.<\/p>\n
