This is a quick but tough, emotional read. The writing style is lyrical and easy to read, but the subject matter is human trafficking and prostitution. This book is the story of a 13 year old Nepali girl who is sold into the red light district of Calcutta, India. She is innocent and ignorant of the ways of city life. Thinking she will be a maid Lakshmi is eager to please so that money will be sent home to her mother and baby brother. She is tricked, drugged, beaten and abused; most of all her hope and will is stolen.
